Old Horse

Sitting in silence.

There are no words - only the energy of the moment, with life, death, deep doubt, deep faith, and incredible determination showing up in a community that sits at the crossroads of our time.

Most of the work that comes is about disputes - mostly ones that are illustrative of power being asserted over vulnerable people who need to work to take care of their themselves and their loved ones, some are about the need to maintain shelter, and still others illustrate the capacity for human beings to behave in ways that are simply horrible. There are many other words that could be used to describe what is happening every day in countless places when no one really notices or can know about the injuries being inflicted.

Now and then a story hits the news (whatever source one chooses these days) and it's easy to see the physical violence, the words that are hurled as threats, and the psychological terror that is created because power is being wielded in an uncontrolled and random, chaotic way. This is what the world is able to see right now in a city called Minneapolis.

At the same time that all the cruelty is being inflicted, so is the capacity for strength in community being uplifted. There are casualties and rather than producing a collective cowering, the response is collective determination – great determination - to engage and not let go of the choice to engage with focus, non-violence, and mutual aid. It takes real courage to step in at times like this and those who do it, know that there will be casualties in the form of death and injury. But the energy of good, the light, the natural tendency to care for one another comes through much stronger than the intimidation.

It's not clear where things will end up, and it is sad that it has taken so many days, weeks, months to get to this point. And then the memory arises, our history comes up, and thanks to the very tools that were created to command and control, bits of truth begin to leak out. The leaks turn into a puddle, then a pond, then a stream, then an ocean – and we see: what is happening is not new.

This is the time to remember that compassion and empathy is key to resilience and sustainability in the face of traumatic events. These are qualities that are a natural path to living in the light. The horse is galloping - we saw it appear earlier in 2025 – it was grazing, then looking up, then choosing a way to saunter into new fields – and now- full on galloping as the lunar cycle turns.

We know what to do.
